Course Description

This Ofqual Regulated qualification provides learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in law or progress onto a bachelor’s degree in a related field. With a focus on theoretical and practical aspects of law, this diploma is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills required to understand and apply the law in various contexts and scenarios. With 240 credits, this Level 5 Extended Diploma is equivalent to the second year of a bachelor’s degree. Upon completion, learners can progress to the LLB Top-Up (final year of a bachelor’s degree in law), either through direct entry or credit transfer. This diploma is also recognised by higher education institutions and employers around the world. The Qualifi Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law is taught through distance learning with the support of experienced tutors and access to a comprehensive online learning portal. The course covers a range of topics including legal agreements, criminal law, sources of law, UK constitution, equity, European Union, real property, and tort. Understand aims and general principles of criminal law and analyse various criminal offences and defences.

Understand historical events leading to the development and nature of Equity and how it operates alongside common law.

Understand the rationale for the European Union’s creation and its impact on the UK and other member states.

Understand the nature and purpose of liability in tort and how it differs from contractual and criminal liability.

Qualifi encourages Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which allows students to receive credit exemptions for certain units or a whole qualification based on their previous achievements and experiences.

Contract Law (30 credits)

Explore a range of alternative dispute resolution processes and procedures, comparing their strengths and limitations and highlighting practical and ethical issues from their use compared to traditional legal approaches to resolving disputes.

Criminal Law (30 credits)

This unit will equip learners with knowledge of the general foundations of criminal liability and understanding of the major types of offences and their constituent elements. The unit aims to enable learners to determine whether specific offences have been committed and whether any defences may be applicable. Learners will explore the aims and nature of criminal law and its function as a protector of the State.

Legal Methods (30 credits)

This unit will equip learners with knowledge and understanding of the identification, interpretation, and analysis of legal sources and materials. The acquired skills will enable the learner to apply the law to facts of problems in any legal area, communicate clearly and persuasively, and reach satisfactory solutions to legal disputes. Learners will explore fundamental principles and components of the English Legal System, the judiciary, and civil and criminal processes, gaining an appreciation of how these principles underpin substantive and procedural areas of law.

Public Law (30 credits)

This unit equips learners with knowledge of constitutional and administrative law foundations, focusing on the main elements of the UK’s constitution. It enables learners to understand the significance of separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty, and human rights norms. Learners will also be introduced to basic principles of administrative law and judicial review processes.

Equity and Trusts (30 credits)

This unit provides in-depth knowledge of principles governing the law of Equity and Trusts. Learners will understand and apply equitable rules to fact-based scenarios, identify and resolve issues clients may face with different types of trusts and equitable remedies, and explore how equity interrelates with other legal topics and applies in domestic and commercial contexts.

EU Law (30 credits)

This unit equips learners with knowledge of the European Union legal system and main substantive aspects of EU laws. It covers the history of the EU, its political institutions, the Court of Justice’s role and jurisdiction, fundamental rights guaranteed by the Union, and the relationship between European and national laws.

Land Law (30 credits)

This unit provides in-depth knowledge of principles governing land law. Learners will understand estates and interests in land, methods of protection, the meaning of real property, types of legal and equitable interests, principles and purposes of registration, and the rules behind registration processes.

Law of Tort (30 credits)

This unit will equip learners with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles governing the law of tort. The unit aims to enable leaners to understand the foundations of tortious liability, remedies and defences. It further aims to enable learners to apply rules governing a variety of specific torts to fact-based scenarios and to identify and resolve issues that claimants and defendants may face. Learners will explore how tort interrelates with criminal law and how social and political decisions impact on the understanding of negligence.
