Course Description

This Masterclass takes you from first principles to advanced musicianship with a clear, practical approach. You’ll read & write notation, understand rhythm and meter, build and analyse scales, intervals, chords, and progressions, craft melody with expressive devices, and use form, modulation, and voice-leading to create polished music across classical, pop, and jazz contexts.

Designed for all levels, the course blends short video lessons, workbook tasks, ear-training drills, and real-world analysis so you can apply theory immediately to your instrument, DAW, or songwriting.

Course Content

Part 1 — Foundations: Notation, Rhythm & Keys

● Musical sound & staff literacy (pitches, clefs, ledger lines)
● Note values, rests, ties, dots; simple & compound meter; irregular time
● Tempo, bar lines, syncopation; rhythm practice sets
● Tonality: major/minor systems, key signatures, Circle of Fifths

Part 2 — Intervals, Scales & Core Harmony

● Interval naming, quality, inversion & ear-training
● Major, natural/harmonic/melodic minor; modes overview
● Triads & seventh chords (major, minor, diminished, augmented, dominant)
● Roman numeral analysis, cadences, functional harmony (I–V–vi–IV, ii–V–I, etc.)

Part 3 — Melody Writing & Musical Expression

● Motifs, phrases, periods; contour & range
● Choosing chords for a given melody; harmonic rhythm
● Voice-leading principles (common tones, smooth motion)
● Non-chord tones: passing, neighbour, appoggiatura, escape, anticipation, pedal, suspensions/retardations

Part 4 — Modulation, Form & Interpretation

● Modulation types: common-chord, direct, sequential, chromatic, enharmonic
● Binary, ternary, rondo, sonata form; hybrid song forms
● Dynamics, articulation, phrasing; stylistic interpretation
● Score reading & analytical projects (classical & contemporary)

Part 5 — Style Studies & Modern Songwriting

● Historical snapshots (Baroque → 20thC) from a pianist’s lens
● Pop/jazz songwriting tools: voicings, tensions, suspended chords, borrowed chords
● Hooks, transitions, left-hand patterns & accompaniments
● Jazz melodic deconstruction: motivic development, chord-scale thinking, modal colour
